Learning dialects and accents

Learning dialects and accents is one of the hardest tasks an actor must do. However, learning dialects and accents is a necessary skill for you to master if you want to be an accomplished actor. This is because most directors and producers like to hire actors who are versatile. That way, if the some characteristic of the character changes, such as the accent of the character, the actor can adjust to the new changes quickly without much down time.

If you are new to learning dialects and accents, you may want to hire a speech therapist. Such a speech therapist will be able to help you learn the nuances of the various dialects and accents you are interested in learning. Moreover, a speech therapist will be able to help you exercise your vocal cords so that you can properly pronounce words in the different dialects and accents. Once you have begun exercising your vocal cords, learning dialects and accents is a simple task.
Another easy way for learning dialects and accents is to simply move to wear the accents and dialects you are interested in learning in are spoken. For instance, if you want to learn a Southern dialect, then move to the South for a few months. Immerse yourself in the everyday life of Southern people and converse with the locals. You will be surprised by how quickly you will begin to start picking up the accent. Many professional actors claim that this is the best way for learning dialects and accents. Certain actors even claim that this is the only way for learning dialects and accents.

Remember that learning dialects and accents is a difficult process. Do not assume that you will be finished learning dialects and accents in just a few days. True mastery of a dialect and accent takes years. For that reason, many people suggest that you do not try to learn more than one dialect or accent at a time. This will keep you from confusing your dialects.

Do not add a certain dialect to your resume until you have confidence in yourself and feel you are pretty close to mastery. Though directors like actors who are versatile, they also like actors who are honest. There is nothing worse than saying you can speak in a certain dialect or with a particular accent and then not be able to deliver on that promise. For this reason, make sure that you are incredibly honest when it comes to writing out your skills on your resume. If you are not one hundred percent sure you know a certain dialect, do not write it down.
