Career Break – A Corporate Necessity

Busy schedule, intolerable work load, stress and tensions; these have become common phenomena in the day to day life of today’s executives. More so because the advent of information technology enabled careers have brought a lot of young people in the foray of becoming managers and performing responsible roles in organizations.

It is true that competition has increased but it is also true that the work capacity to perform has also developed over the years. But all this has had a negative impact on the health of young individuals. More and more young executives are complaining about stress and depression due to work. Insomnia has become a common disease amongst working professionals these days. All this has and is affecting the performance of these dynamic individuals too. The non performance of executives further results in the loss of revenue for the organization.

The good sign is that companies have taken cognizance of the stress related issues of their executives. “Better late than never”. Several big organizations have taken steps to attend the issue of depression and stress amongst their executives, especially if the job profile includes decision making. Several companies have started sponsoring long vacations for their executives. These vacations are as long as a couple of months to may be half a year. The executives are given a choice to spend the time at their favorite holiday destination and they are packed to their chosen place. This activity has been given a term called “career break”.

A career break can also be taken by an individual on their own sponsorship. There are many executives that I know who have resigned from a particular job, spent a year doing their own stuff in leisure and then joined another job.

Career breaks have two advantages. One, an executive can take out some time for the family which reduces depression and stress. Two, it gives a moral boost up to the individual and rejuvenates them for the next challenge.

The companies gain more revenue eventually by sponsoring a holiday of their important executives. First, the company retains an important employee. Secondly, this employee would be able to perform better when he comes back from the career break, all rejuvenated and distressed.

A career break can also mean a complete change in the career for an individual too. Usually people get bored of their monotonous schedule and life. They become reluctant to do the job which at one time they had liked the most. Hence, there are people who save a respectable amount of money in their pockets and look at options to change their career while they are on a break. There are individuals who have served at senior levels in the BPO industry but have now become authors.

Career breaks have become an essential part of the corporate chaos today. Who does not want a break far away from the hustle bustle of the daily routine and the crazy urban life? Who does not want a change?
