Watermelon and its benefits

The round football like fruit with red flesh actually comes in more than twelve hundred varieties. It is a respite fruit in summers because of its juicy flesh.

Watermelon has a lot of health benefits too. Watermelon is full of antioxidants. It is a major source of vitamin C and A. The antioxidants available in watermelons help remove blockade thus reducing the risk of heart attacks. Watermelon also helps in increasing the blood levels because of the presence of carotenoid lycopene. Watermelon also reduces the risk of prostrate cancer if eaten with green tea.

Watermelons are rich in vitamin B and thus increase the energy level in a body. Watermelon is also a good source of magnesium and potassium. Watermelon is a reasonable fruit but it has a lot of rich reasons to buy.

Watermelons are produced all over the world and hence there are some debates on the history and birth of them. Some scholars state that these fruits were first grown in African nation of Egypt somewhere in the 10th century BC. Another line of scholars say that watermelons were first produced in China in the 10th century BC. Some also say that they were first planted in Vietnam by an exiled prince who was left alone on an island to survive.

There is a strange way of producing watermelons in Japan. Farmers grow these fruits in square shaped glasses and the watermelon takes a square shape when it grows big. This is kind of a molding of the fruit to give it a convenient shape. The Japanese thought that it was difficult to transport round shaped watermelons as they would take a lot of shape and roll of here and there. Hence they came up with an idea of a square watermelon.

The watermelon is one of the richest fruits of the world as far as the nutrient value is concerned. And it is good to taste too. Hence, come summers and start consuming as much as you can. You will have no health issues in the future probably.
