LTTE – Is this the end

The LTTE (Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelam), a terrorist outfit declared by 32 world countries is based in Sri Lanka. LTTE was established in 1976 by Vellupillai Prabhakaran. Since then, LTTE has been demanding a separate independent Tamil state in the North and Eastern Sri Lanka. However, Prabhakaran first founded the TNT (Tamil New Tigers) in 1972 which later was renamed the LTTE. Prabhakaran got into the limelight after he assassinated the mayor of Jaffna of that time, Alfred Duraiappah, in 1975.

Since 1975, the LTTE has been involved in a lot of high level political assassinations in India and Sri Lanka. These assassinations include the May 1991 killing of Rajeev Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India and then the President of Sri Lanka Ramasinghe Premadasa in 1993. LTTE introduced the concept of suicide bombings which was soon adopted by Hamas and other Jehadi outfits across the world. Rajeev Gandhi was a victim of a suicide attack.

LTTE is a sophisticated military outfit and had raised a lot of foreign funds in lieu of the Tamil liberation cause. They have been even able to acquire fighter jets to carry out militant activities and to fight against the Sri Lankan army.

The latest reports say that the LTTE has been almost wiped out of its strong hold Mullativu district and there are chances that Prabhakaran has either fled or has been killed.

LTTE has been active for the past 32 years but now they have been diminished to a handful. But the LTTE should not be written off completely. History says that militant outfits which had been thought to be wiped out have again risen in some or the other form under some or the other name. LTTE has been one of the strongest terror outfits in the world. Forgetting them would not be wise. Moreover, the LTTE cause of a free Tamil State will not die soon.
