Maldives – A mermaid in the Sea

Maldives is a small Island country in the South West of India. It is a country formed by a group of 26 atolls consisting of 1192 islets of which 250 roughly are inhabited. It is the world’s lowest country at juts 1.5 meters above sea level. The highest point in Maldives is at 2.3 meters. Maldives was a British colony till its independence in 1965.

The main source of Maldivian economy is Tourism and second is fishery. 3 years after Independence, Maldives became a republic in 1968. Mr. Mamun Abdul Gayum was the President of Maldives for 30 years until he lost the Presidency to Mr Mohammed Nasheed in 2008.

Maldives has developed as a major tourist attraction. The beautiful Islands and the blue lagoons of the clear sea, form a picturesque treat to the eye. Hundreds of Resorts have been built on different islands to attract tourism. Nearly 60% of the national revenue is generated through tourism.

Maldives has a population of around 3, 00,000 and around 6, 00,000 tourists visit Maldives every year. Maldives also has had a share of misfortunes. In the year 2004, Tsunami was caused due to an earthquake in the Indian Ocean. Maldives got hit badly by the Tsunami and many of the resorts got destroyed. Tourism had to shut down on some islands because the facilities were completely wiped out. Maldives however has come out of the disaster by encouraging tourism more after the Tsunami struck. Another major concern for Maldives is that the sea is rising by approximately 8 inches per year. Eventually Maldives will drown. The current Maldivian government is seriously thinking about buying land in Shrilanka, India or Australia to rehabilitate the Maldivians.

However, Maldives still remains largely unexplored by world tourists. Since the main .source of income is Tourism, Maldives needs to grow in the Tourism sector if it really wants to buy a piece of land to re-habilitate it’s people on another land.
