International winter holidays

When the winter period approaches most people in the world start thinking about Christmas and the New Years Eve. In this article I try to familiarize you with different holidays celebrated in different styles in the winter period.The Chanukah (Hanukkah/Festival of Light)In simpler terms, this simply means rededication. According to the Jewish it is also referred to as Festival of Lights. The Jewish celebrate their victory at the temple and the lamp oil lasting for eight days when there was only enough for one day. It is celebrated on the 25th day of the Kislev month according to the Jewish calendar which falls between November and December. The Chinese New Year (Sun and Moon)According to the Chinese calendar, this is mostly based on the Sun and The Moon movement. The celebration starts on the appearance of the first new moon of the New Year and end when the moon is full fifteen days later marking the Lantern Festival. The Kwanzaa for African American (26th Dec.-1st jan)On the 26th of December to 1st of January, a seven day event is organized whereby community, gathering and reflection are celebrated to honor African American people, culture and history. It is called Kwanzaa from the Swahili phrase "matunda wa kwanza"(Meaning the First Fruit). The Ramadan (Fasting)(Id-ul-Fitr) It comes on the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. Includes going the whole day without food and drink (Fasting), then coming together with family and friends in the evening to share a small meal. At the end of fasting there is always a three day holiday known as Feast of Fast Breaking (Id-ul-Fitr). along with gift giving, prayer and celebrating.The Shichi-Go-San (Seven-Five-Three) (Nov.15th)This is a Japanese festival mostly celebrated on November the 15th or the closest weekend. It is a feast for girls of 3 and 7 years old and boys of 3 and 5 years old. The Saint Lucia Day (Luciadagen)(Dec.13th)It is a Swedish Holiday that falls on 13th December. It is considered the commencing of the holiday season and a virgin martyr called St. Lucia is glorified.
The Vietnamese New Year(Tet?)Vietnamese New Year is referred to as Tet. It is celebrated at the start of the year according to the lunar calendar between the last ten days of January and mid of February. Envelopes red in color are given to children an action that is considered for lucky year. The Boxing Day (Dec.26th)(Origin unknown)This is majorly celebrated in Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It normally falls on December 26th. It is a holiday of unknown origin and can be back dated back to the middle ages.The Hogmanay in Scotland (Dec.31st)Even though Scotland does not celebrate Boxing Day, it makes a huge festival which is also referred to as Hogmany. It falls on the 31st of December annually.Christmas (The Birth of baby Jesus)(Dec.25th)This is a holiday celebrated by countless people all over the world and it is usually a Christian festival. From the word Christmas you automatically generate the meaning as the Feast of Christ, this holiday is celebrated to mark the birth of baby Jesus Christ. It is normally celebrated on the 25th December annually.
