Unemployment figures

The word employment got importance from the time of great depression. The unemployment figures also were discussed hotly for the first time in history by the common people in those great depression days. The unemployment rate was twenty five percent. The number of unemployed people is also available. What was the use of these unemployment figures? The very definition of the unemployed people excludes all the self employed people. The farmers are supposed to be self employed. So the farmer population was not included in those unemployment figures. The reality was that lot many farmers had to sell of their farms. They had to migrate all over America in search of some job. The miserable farmers would not have believed those unemployment figures.

The employment figures have always been hotly discussed amongst all types of people. It is a fact that these unemployment figures do help to understand this unemployment phenomenon. You can understand the trend regarding the unemployment. There are some methods which are more useful in the particular fields. It is easy to get more accurate idea about the unemployment figures in particular race or gender. The definition of unemployed is also flawed from the point of view of many critics. If the definition is flawed then the unemployment figures arrived at based on this definition is bound to be faulty.

One of the criterion for the definition for the unemployed is that person must be actively seeking work. Many people feel that there is large population which is discouraged to look for the jobs. These people lose the interest in actively seeking the work. But it certainly does not men that these people are not unemployed. There is lot many people who are part time employed. These people are not unemployed as per the definition. But the fact is that they are also seeking full time employment. But they are not accounted in all these unemployment figures. There are many underemployed people. Suppose that there is a computer engineer. He cannot get a job in the computer industry. He has taken up a job in the retail store. He wants to make some income while waiting for the suitable full time work. The person like this is officially employed person. Thought he fact is that he feels like an unemployed person till he gets the computer related job. This sort of distortions of the reality is also the part of the unemployment figures.

There is other type of distortion of these unemployment figures possible. In many countries, the people prefer to get the unemployment benefits rather than d o the real job. The people who do not seek work gladly declare themselves as unemployed simply to get the benefits. These unemployment figures will be too high as compared to the reality.
