Depeche Mode is a very influential band that cropped up in the eighties. It reached the summit of popularity in the United States from the year 1987-1994. Although it was an electronic band they succeeded in creating a niche for themselves despite of the fact that numerous electro/new bands had emerged in the eighties.
Critics often described electronic music as soulless. It was argued that to feel real music real instruments have to be played. However, Depeche Mode successfully managed to dispel this impression by composing some excellent melancholy music.
There was no trace of emotional music in their first album 'Speak and Spell'. It evolved into a melancholy electronic band only in their second album 'A Broken Frame'. While the sound of music remained the same as in the first album, the lyrics definitely were different. Depeche Mode was clearly taking a different direction. The lyrics reflected personal relationships and the music comprised of industrial sounds.
With David Gahan as the vocalist, Andrew Fletcher at the keyboards and Martin Gore as the songwriter, Depeche Mode surged ahead of all other electronic bands of the eighties. 'Master and Servant' and 'Blasphemous Rumors' assured the band of a revered spot in the eighties.
'Black Celebration' which was released in the year 1986 took Depeche Mode to new heights. Inspite of being popular among the masses, their performances were considered as an underground act. But this perception changed when 'Violator' was released in the year 1990. This album gave the bands a superstar status worldwide.
When the songs from the 1993 release' Faith and Devotion' topped the music charts Depeche Mode reached the peak of popularity. The year 1995 saw some misfortune eclipsing the band, but the band of trio bounced back with the release of 'Ultra' in 1997, 'Exciter' in 2001 and 'Playing the Angel' in 2005. It proves why they are such an influential band.
The combination of industrial noise and pop arrangements with lyrics that reflect on relationships, spirituality and faith is what kept the band in the limelight. Besides they never restricted themselves to the norms of electronic music. The innovative sounds produced by them distinguished them from other bands. They were able to entice not only the pop listeners by also the most hardcore Goth fan.
Their songs expressed sadness, our imperfect desires and they also spoke about addiction. Their lyrics were inspirational because they also sang about love and life in a realistic way. Even today those songs hold the same charm and can be played when you want to create that perfect romantic setting.
