Bluetooth Technology –

We have all heard about WAN (Wide Area Network), a system of connecting devices separated by large distances, and LAN (Local Area Network), a protocol to connect devices or computers in a limited area like office, etc. Bluetooth technology is called PAN (Personal Area Network). Bluetooth is a protocol to connect and exchange data over amongst mobile or fixed devices at a short range. It is an alternative to data cables. Several devices can be connected through wireless medium via Bluetooth technology.

The name Bluetooth sounds strange but it was generated from the Danish word Blattand after the king of Norway and Denmark Herald I. Herald I had been taken as an influence to the name Bluetooth because he united small tribes into one during his rule. Bluetooth serves the same objective in technology.

Bluetooth technology helps in exchanging data using 2.4 ghz Radio frequency between laptops, mobile phone, PCs, Digital Cameras, GPS systems, etc. Bluetooth devices come in three classes where the ranges differ between 10 meters to 100 meters of connectivity.

The most popular of Bluetooth devices are hands-free headsets for mobile phones, Bar code scanners, GPS systems, Laptop to Laptop data transfer, etc. It’s a remarkable breakthrough in Information and communication technology.

However, every product or invention has its pros and cons. Bluetooth technology also has its share of cons. Though it has facilitated the exchange of communication amongst small ranges of gadgets, it has also increased the vulnerability of secured information.
Bluetooth technology is used a lot by terror outfits to gain information from secure devices. Bluetooth can transfer virus through it into devices in its range. Usually mobile phones and laptops are more susceptible to virus attacks through unsecured Bluetooth connections.

Bluetooth technology, no doubt has made things simpler for people on the go but then it needs to be used with caution. First step to taking precaution is, set your Bluetooth enabled phone to “not discoverable by other devices” mode.
