Understanding Kalaripayattu Fitness Program in Depth

Over the last few decades, Kalaripayattu has conquered the minds of fitness conscious people in urban cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Bombay and Chennai. Thousands of students from the IT sector, from both sexes have enrolled in this fitness program for countless reasons. Not only the men have found it attractive but even the fairer sex have been immensely interested in this fitness program.

More and more people across the world are getting interested to know more about the postures of Kalaripayattu- the martial art originated in Kerala, India. Kalaripayattu is basically inspired by the raw power and sinuous strength of wild animals. This art was initially taught by ancient masters in total isolation, ‘away from preying eyes’. Moreover the Kalaripayattu has come a long way from combat mode to a means of self-expression, and now even blending itself into a contemporary and classical dance form.

Kalaripayattu helps in enhancing the intense facial expressions and stamina, which is required while performing Bharatanatyam. While the basic Kalaripayattu training is imparted to all the students, the other components of the art like Kalari massage and Marma therapy are taught only to the senior students. Massage not only helps the body to attain a healthy constitution, flexibility, liveliness and agility but also improves mental alertness and attention span by reducing tension and calming the mind.

There are three types of Kalari massages that are employed to relieve the body aches and muscular pains; to provide rejuvenation; and to increase flexibility and physical endurance. The techniques used in Kalari massage ensure the right flow of energy through the Marma or vital points in the body.

The basic concept of Marma therapy is to identify the vital energy points in your body. Marmas are located in the muscles, vessels, ligaments, joints and back-bone regions, and it is assumed that different postures or asana help keep the Marmas clear and energized. Dancers, athletes, aerobic trainers, yoga and physical instructors along with martial artists take active part in learning various Marma therapies to get maximum benefit from them. It is important to know that Marma therapy is found very effective in treating sport related injuries like swelling, edema and congestion. Though the relief is not instant, it is found to be effective. But understand that if stimulating the Marmas can cure a person, causing grievous injuries to them can kill one as well.
