Rain Water Harvesting

Rain water harvesting is simply gathering water from rainfall into a tank for usage during the drier months of the year. It is a very simple process but the concept has become more and more necessary because of the increasing population throughout the world and the increasing shortage of water. Rain water harvesting is for many a purpose ranging from Household, irrigation to industrial requirements.

Rain water harvesting is required more in the tropical countries which have extreme climates. Countries like India have extreme summers and extreme rainfalls especially in the Central and Eastern India.

There are 2 systems of Rain Water Harvesting. The DIY (Do it Yourself) and Commercial systems. Why DIY? Because the mechanism is simple. We essentially need a tank and a few pipes to store and transit the water.

Rainwater harvesting is used largely now in India to increase the water bed under the ground, provide irrigation water throughout the year, induce greenery in the local urban areas and for drinking. However, rainwater is not good for drinking because it contains a lot of dirt in it. It contains animal and bird waste and also dusts particles. Best way is to check the TDS in the water and then use a filtration system like Reverse osmosis provided by a number of domestic water filter producing companies, before making it drinkable.

How?

A system is used to transit the rain water from the roof and to a tank below. A pressure pump may be required to store and throw the water more efficiently. A UV or RO filter might be required before the water is used depending upon the purpose.

In the time of increasing global warm up, Rain Water Harvesting can become an eventual necessity for each and every household and commercial place. Start storing water now so that you do not have to collect your sweat and tears later.

  1. There are two other rainwater harvesting resources that anyine interested in the subject and movement should familiarize themselves with.
Brad Lancaster...basically the leadingf authority on the topic in the US. His Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond book and the supporting website prove invaluable.
The second resource is http://www.raintankdepot.com , which covers a lot of the design, installation, health considerations, purification, case studies, videos, and other links.
    Good luck!
