Influence of Robinson Crusoe

Robinson Crusoe was a character sketched out by Daniel Defoe in his 1719 novel “The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York, Mariner”. It is said to be the first novel written in English. The character Robinson Crusoe is a mariner who is cast away after a shipwreck to an island to the North of Venezuela. In real life, this island can be figured out to be the island of Tobago.

The novel gives an adventurous account of the 28 years spent by Robinson Crusoe on this island. Here he comes across a lot of confrontations with tribal people and wild animals. He also discovers his friend and servant “Man Friday” on this island when he saves his life and Friday commits himself to be Crusoe’s slave. “Man Friday” was named so because he was discovered on a Friday.

The influence of Man Friday stands till today. Man Friday is a term given to describe and praise a loyal servant even today. Robinson Crusoe’s life has also been very influential through the ages. This character sets an example of how tolerant a human can be. The patience and the courage that Robinson Crusoe had, is taken as a bench mark by common man today.

Almost every kid across the globe either knows the story of Robinson Crusoe or it is taught in schools. There have been many a narrations of the bravery of Robinson Crusoe by different authors who followed after Daniel Defoe. There have been several movies about Robinson Crusoe which have been produced by famous producers all over the world. The latest being the film “Robinson Crusoe” in 1997 starring Pierce Brosnan.
