Getting Acquainted With the World Wide Web

Today the use of Internet has become so popular that it is estimated that more than a quarter of the population in the world has access to it and uses it for information, for communication, for leisure and for official purposes. The internet is a worldwide system, which is interconnected by computer networks which consist of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks.

The internet is connected through wireless connections, fiber-optic cables, copper wires and other technologies. The World Wide Web (WWW) and its infrastructure supports electronic mail (e-mail) and other popular services like file transfer and file sharing, online chatting, online gaming, person-to-person communication through voice and video, webcams and the like.

The internet has its origin way back in the 1960s when the United States funded military projects to build robust computer networks. The National Science Foundation created worldwide participation and this led to commercialization of international network in the 1990s. On August 6, 1991, CERN, a European research organization publicized the new WWW project and the inventor was an English scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989.The internet and World Wide Web are used synonymously now and it is a collection of interconnected documents and other things which are linked by hyperlinks and URLs.

The internet has shrunk the world and anyone anywhere can connect with anyone anywhere in the world through the internet. It has made chatting so popular that even dating and marriages are conducted through it. The Internet has made it possible to send files and documents as attachments and has made everyone connectible.

The common methods of accessing the internet include the landline broadband (through copper wires or fiber optic), dial-up; satellite Wi-Fi, and 3G technology cell phones. The Internet can be accessed from virtually anywhere; all you require is a network support. Mobile phones, data cards, handheld game consoles and cellular routes allow people to connect to the internet.

The most common usage of the Internet is the e-mail. People can send messages, documents, and photographs through email. Photos and documents are sent as attachments. You can send copies to multiple people and organizations.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo and others have made people get information easily on a vast and diverse amount of topics. By using the internet one can get a large audience to participate in discussions, arguments and exchange information and data. Many people have their own websites where relevant information is downloaded and made accessible to others. Facebook and My Space are new offerings of the net which have a large following.

Advertising and sale of products through the net have reduced movements of people and you can view and buy things online.

Thanks to the Internet as people can work from home, saving commuting time. If conditions are not suitable to hold a regular office job (small babies at home, handicap, or any such reason) people can earn through the internet. An accountant sitting at home can audit the books of a company which may be in a different county. A writer can send his articles and stories and get them published through the Internet.

People use the internet to download music, movies, books and other forms of enjoyment. News, weather reports, sports reports, online booking for travel, can all be done through the internet.
