Careers in Indian Navy

Indian naval history dates back to 5000 years and the main role of navy includes the security of coastal regions, fight against any threats causing to the Indian population living in the coastal territories in conjunction with the other armed forces. Indian navy also helps to build good relationships between different countries and helping them in disastrous conitions. 4 December of every year is observed as Indian Naval Day.

The Indian Navy is operated under four commands and their head quarters are located region-wise as: western naval command-Mumbai HQ, eastern naval command-Vishakapatnam HQ, southern naval command-Kochi HQ and far eastern naval command in Port Blair.

Careers in Indian Navy can be perceived by any Indian of any caste, religion and class. Screening is a compulsory procedure in selecting a person for any job in navy. You can join navy after you finish yor schooling, graduation or post-graduation, you will ranked accordingly. Patriotism, idealism and courage should be the main characteristics of a person who wants to perceive a career in navy. There are unlimited opportunities to learn practically and technically in this field and you will be rewarded for all those achievements in your tenure.

Examination is conducted by UPSC in June and December every year and the examination information are published in the Employment News column.There are two categories in this examination. First one is Written exam and the second category is interview. Candidates should get through in both the categories. Unmarried Indian citizen of age group between 15-18 years who has passed matriculation in first class i.e., 60% are eligible to take up the exam. Weight and height would be the next criteria. A person in a good medical condition and who has not undergone any surgery are eligible to apply for the job. The person should have knowledge in science, english grammar, mathematics, current affairs and will have a written test on these subjects as a part of examination. Qualifying in physical fitness test is compulsory to take up the job. Usually physical test will have pull-ups, running and balancing the weights to qualify. Sons of servicemen or Ex-servicemen are also eligible to take up the job.

The selected candidates are given training in both physical and technical fields academically for 3 years in any of the three services namely Army, AirForce and Defence.
Air force candiadtes will receive a training for 1-1 1/2 years and will be designated as Pilot officer. Army candidtes are called as Gentleman cadets and are given military training for 1 year. The naval candidates are posted to Engineering branches of the navy and are given the designation, Executive.

Training cadets of the Indian navy are paid a fixed stipend of Rs.8000/= per month during their last year of training.

The Indian Navy is broadly classified into Administration, Logistics and Material, Training, The Fleets, The Naval Aviation and The Submarine Arm.

Women are a part of Indian naval army since 1992, and 22 officers were recruited for the first time in various categories like logistics and training divisions.

To perceive a career in Indian navy is a great pride to any Indian and a foremost duty to a person who is eligible.
