Can Science Ever Explain the Divine?

The debate between the “divine” and the “scientific” can be traced back to the days of Adam, the first man on earth. While Science is based on concrete proof the divine commands complete faith from mankind. For a long time the two were treated as polar opposites to each other. Staunch believers of either of the clubs often considered the other to be their soul enemies. Off late, however, thinkers, scientists and even religious leaders have come to recognise the subtle unison with which both Science and Divinity function. Recent findings on the birth of the Universe do hint at a cosmic event triggered by an inexplicable force. The very fact that we as human beings stand alone in the vast Universe and earth alone can support life is indeed magical. While Religion calls that God’s influence, Science believes it is the Multiverse Hypothesis.

Most religious and mythological texts refer to a great flood that almost engulfed the whole world. It is believed that, at that time the earth could support life only through divine intervention. While the Bible cites about the Noah’s Ark, Hindus believe God Vishnu offered help in the guise of a turtle. For a long time Science chose to laugh it off. But recent research works suggest at the occurrence of a great flood which left vast parts of the earth inundated. How life continued to exist on the planet even in such a condition is not yet clear. While Darwin’s “Origin of Species” explains the evolution of Man from apes, his theory is not full proof. Even to this day the “missing links” of his theory are yet to be clarified. Similarly even an ace surgeon cannot tell you where exactly lies the human mind or the conscience that is responsible for all our action.

Science has undoubtedly helped us to dispel our ignorance and know the truth. In recognising these truths, we must also acknowledge that the Divine alone can be so punctual and accurate. Be it the tides or the eclipses, man may know the methods of prediction but he may never have the power to prevent them. Scientists across the world are also baffled by the number of cosmic catastrophes from which our planet has been saved a number of times. You may call it Divine intervention or a matter of Multiverse Hypothesis, but that the power of it is magnificent cannot be denied.

Whether it is landing on the moon or sending spacecrafts to unknown galaxies, we have done it all. The pace at which scientific discoveries are progressing, we may even be able to create a mini universe in the near future! However, we must accept that by doing that we shall only be replicating the divine and the ideal of which we are an integral part. Man’s quest to chase the unknown and question the unanswered is an everlasting sojourn. In an attempt to unfurl the truth he is only getting closer to the Divine. For with the help of Science we get to know how God’s mind works.
